BOATERS FOR BOOKS GRENADA
Grenada is perhaps best known as the spice island, a major source of nutmeg,
clove, ginger, cinnamon and coco. Actually it is a nation comprised of three
islands: the mainland of Grenada and the small outlaying islands of Carriacou
and Petit Martinique. It is home to more than 30,000 young people on whom the
proud Democratic future of Grenada depends. On the mainland, there are more
than a dozen parish schools. Few have libraries; most depend upon the
bookmobile provided by the National Library in St. Georges.
Boaters for Books has provided Grenada with several thousand children’s books,
now circulating among the primary schools in Grenada. Director of Library
Services Lillian Sylvester has been instrumental in the success of this program. In
the summer of 2002, a devastating fire swept the waterfront in St. Georges,
burning a number of historic buildings. Thanks to the heroic efforts of firemen,
the National Library was saved, but not without a great deal of water damage.
Many books were damaged and all the computers were lost. Now more than ever
Grenada needs our help.
